GR - Can you compare The Last of Us and Animal Crossing and come away with a winner or shades of beautiful gray? Animal Crossing: New Leaf and The Last of Us released right around the same time in June of 2013. I reviewed both titles for GameRevolution and found each stunning, engaging, and wholly consuming for very different reasons. Each received a 5/5. I loved Animal Crossing's daring approach to an established brand, reneging on neanderthal mechanics that prevented you from getting your sh** done around town. Further, the title allowed you to become the mayor for the first time and determine how and where your town would expand. Entertaining features like the police station or fixtures like bridges and benches became earned goods, not pre-determined and immovable rocks. The Last of Us, however, was a very different beast.

Coming out of GDC is the announcement that Animal Crossing: New Leaf has sold over 7,380,000 units worldwide. For context, "the handheld title is currently outselling other triple-A titles like Naughty Dog's The Last of Us." I wonder if Nintendo's already returning to the Animal Crossing drawing board.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf has moved over 7.38 million units worldwide, revealed series' creator Katsuya Eguchi at the Game Developers Conference this week. In addition to just being a great game with a great marketing effort, the game also did as well as it did because of how the development team was split gender wise.

Series creator Katsuya Eguchi shared the exciting news during GDC, confirming that the charming 3DS exclusive has sold a staggering 7.38 million units across the globe. No small feat, especially when considering the game still hasn't even been out an entire year.
